The Wax Jambu is native to Indonesia and Malaysia. In its natural distribution it reaches sixty feet in height, with a trunk four or more feet in diameter. The flowers, considered among the most beautiful in the tropics, measure up to three inches in diameter and are mainly composed of numerous stamens that when they fall form an attractive carpet. The fruits are red, pear shaped and up to three inches long, the flesh is white and tastes like apple. This tree, like corduroy, was introduced by the English to the Caribbean in 1793 to serve as cheap food for slaves.
